Hawaii honeymoon advice?

Lindsay J asked:

Recent posts regarding the locals being unhappy having tourists on their island has begun to make me wish I had chosen to honeymoon somewhere else, but we already have a lot of money invested in our trip to Hawaii. We will be staying on Oahu for 3 nights and Kauai for 6. My question is, can anyone tell me if there are any SPECIFIC places or activities that we will not feel welcome and should avoid, or any places that really appreciate tourists? I want to do be able to have a good time and do a lot while we are there without having to worry about rudeness simply because we are not from there. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

I have been going to Hawaii since I was a Kid…I am now a parent and take my kids as often as possible. In the 30 years I have been going to The Beautiful Hawaiian Islands I can count on ONE hand the number of times I have been treated in a rude manner and have 2 fingers left over…You will be treated the way you treat,Respect is a Two-Way street..Show Respect, Get Respect…that is all you need to remember. I find the Hawaiian Peoples to be Kind and Welcoming…I would say those persons that have a negative experience with the Native Islanders have generally brought it upon themselves, by being Rude or Arrogant…the Hawaiians don’t put up with either of those attitudes..Why should they? We are VISITORS in their Island Paradise. ~~Aloha, let me be the first to say…E Komo Mai (Welcome)~~Michelle~~

On Kauai be sure to visit the Kilohana Plantation and have lunch or dinner at Gaylord’s. We also enjoyed the carriage ride around the plantation.
It’s been 3 yrs. since we were there, but we didn’t find people to be rude. On Oahu we had a lot of fun visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center.
Hope you have a wonderful honeymoon!

    Don’t let others scare you.

Hawaii is a very beautiful place. If you are not running around with an attitude and being rude to people, you will be fine. Hawaii is VERY laid back so don’t expect it to move at the pace of a big city.

Having your honeymoon in Hawaii will be a very memorable event for you. It is amazingly beautiful, very laid back, the food is very good, the locals are friendly (except for some, but you’d get some rude people anywhere you went in the world).

If you are still uneasy when you get there, talk to any of the staff at your rental car agency or your hotel and they can tell you what they think should be avoided.

Enjoy your honeymoon and judge for yourself. Remember to take your camera as you’ll want to take many pictures.

    Congratulations to you!

Just try and stay in areas that are tourist-geared and you’ll be fine. On Oahu, stay in Waikiki/Honolulu, and tourist destinations like the Polynesian Cultural Center (which I highly recommend). Kaua’i is pretty rural all over, just stick to places where you see shopping centers and stuff. I would say a great way not to offend anyone is to learn about the culture before you go there…don’t just assume that the stereotypes that you know are correct; that is a main reason why “tourists” aren’t liked by Hawaiian people. The culture and language there is widely misunderstood. Pleeeaaase don’t wave your hands around or “pretend” that you are dancing hula, us hula dancers take our craft very seriously. Just remember, you are dealing with someone else’s history, culture, and heritage, so be respective and polite, and willing to learn. =]

No, do not worry about what you’ve heard. Hawaii is beautiful, and I spent two weeks there on my honeymoon. My husband and I felt very welcomed and were treated kindly by everyone. Treat your surroundings with respect, ie, don’t litter or act like a jerk, and you will be fine. Seriously. Don’t regret your decision. You will have a wonderful time!

You will have no problem visiting Hawaii. The state’s economy revolves around tourism….and the only locals you would meet that don’t like tourists are the hard-core guys who have no real education….and feel that the world owes them a living. They are few and far between.

All cities (places) have those folks that hang together (gangs of sorts) and I would think you would not involve yourself with those types anyway. You will not find them in tourist areas anyway…..as this is not where they want to be.

You will have an excellent time…and will be glad you went….

    Aloha! Hawai’i no ka oi…..
